Graffiti and ‘Whippids’

September 20th, 2011 / No Comments »

Angel Espino has made his board an example of what’s at the heart of Bordo Bello—bringing “fine” art together with “street” art. While we don’t actually believe there is a huge difference between the two, we are trying to show the community that they can be one in the same. In his own words, Angel says “As you can see, the board design is inspired by graffiti. I collaborated with a friend from back home in El Paso, Luis Contreras. Art and Graffiti has always been in an inspiration in the work I do. The “whippids” of paint that overlays the lettering are similar to the style of work I do on canvas.”

Innovating with the Next Generation – IDEO Designer Ryan Fitzgibbon

September 16th, 2011 / No Comments »

One of our favorite words at Bordo Bello headquarters is innovate. We like innovation because it’s a quality that keeps popping up every year with the kinds of decks our artists and designers dream up. Innovation is one of the primary functions of the San Francisco Bay Area based design and innovation consulting think tank IDEO. We’re pumped that Ryan Fitzgibbon, a Communication Designer at the San Fran firm, is participating with us this year by contributing a deck!

We started following Ryan’s work after we saw him cut his teeth participating in Command X at the 2009 AIGA National Conference in Memphis, Tennessee. Through a series of design problems, solved during the conference and presented on the main stage, a panel of esteemed designers judged a select group of seven young designers down to one winner—in front of 2,000 peers, heroes and potential bosses, where Ryan came in second place (of note, his re-brand of Graceland was awesome). Since then he has been busy during his two years at IDEO focusing on strategic and organizational design in both the public and private sectors, and racking up his frequent flier miles (he’s spent three months in Singapore – one of IDEO’s newest and smallest offices – in addition to conducting research in Brazil, India, Australia, and multiple US cities).

There’s so much local, national, and international talent participating in our event this year! Ryan is definitely one of the gang!

Jessi Arrington, a wonderful designer and lover of rainbows, out of Brooklyn sent over this wonderful video of her deck. We love how her handkerchief changes with her color work!

We knew we would smile when she created he deck, we just didn’t expect it to be one of the largest grins we ever had!

and a special thank you for SwissMiss for posting on her site!

Traditionally Modern Kung-Fu

September 15th, 2011 / No Comments »

Dipping into their love of Kung-Fu flicks, old school Japanese brush art and eastern culture, the Friends of Mine Creative Collective brought us these three martial art-themed boards. Gorgeous in its line work and color, this is a stunning set. Mike Delavega sketched up the original boards and concept and, in collaboration with Adam Espinoza, tightened the sketches and developed the color scheme, hoping to show the energy of traditional Japanese moods with a modern taste.

The Friends of Mine Creative Collective has been officially in business since May of 2010. Jeremy Lindenmier and Adam Espinoza head up the collective, always pushing forward with the idea that collaboration brings the best results. We bring in only the most talented folks from around the Denver area as well as their friends on the East and West coast.

A Friendly Bordo Bello Turf War, Shakespeare Style!

September 15th, 2011 / No Comments »

“Two households, both alike in dignity, in fair Denver, where we lay our scene, from ancient grudge break to new mutiny, where civil blood makes civil hands unclean…”

Yeah, we just went all Shakespeare on ya… but we couldn’t help it! Why you might ask? We just caught wind of a little skateboard deck art war going on here in the Mile High City between designers Jason Hines and his friend Chris Streger courtesy of the Denver Egotist. Apparently there’s been a little back and forth between the pair on how awesome one’s deck is over the other so they upped the stakes by making a bet on whose deck would raise more money during the auction for our benefactors!

We love hearing about this kind of stuff, and it gets us super pumped that our art and design community here in Denver has embraced this event with so much enthusiasm! Now don’t go all Montague and Capulet on us guys… swords won’t be allowed in the gallery!

Handi-work on deck!

(Apologies for the pun)  It is always fun to see a hand-drawn piece in the mix. If it looks this awesome in progress, no doubt it’s going to be awesome when finished. The person responsible for this gem is Michelle Kondrich. A Denver based illustrator whose work has been published in HOW Magazine, The Village Voice and Ammo Magazine in the UK, Michelle loves the world of illustration and the variety of projects it allows her to be involved in.
